Top-tier Concussion Care
When it comes to your brain, don't settle for anything less than the experts who set the global standards for concussion care.
The Kutcher Clinic is led by Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, an internationally recognized expert and sports neurology pioneer, specializing in the diagnosis and management of concussion, post-concussion syndrome (also known as persisting symptoms after concussion) and neurological conditions in athletes.
Recover with the doctors who wrote the book and research — literally — on concussion.
What to Expect
To provide the best care, we dedicate 1-hour to new concussion patients and strongly encourage an in-person appointment to allow for a thorough neurological exam. Telehealth appointments are offered, and common, for most follow-up appointments.
Our initial concussion assessment includes:
-
concussion, neurological and medical history
-
neurological examination
-
review of imaging (if available)
-
review of medical records (if available)
-
review of the mechanism of injury, including video (if available)
Concussion symptoms, often mimick common, everyday ailments. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis must consider the mechanism of injury and the forces likely experienced, on both the brain and the body - with focus on the head and neck.
Once we have completed our evaluation, patients can expect an educational discussion that will include: what is a concussion, what is causing the symptoms, how we will treat these symptoms, the plan for safe return to sport and/or life and how to optimize brain health.
Is the patient a student-athlete? To ensure a safe and optimal return to play, the Kutcher Clinic routinely coordinates care with school athletic trainers and other medical staff.
What is a Concussion
Concussion is a temporary change in brain function and not a structural traumatic brain injury. Concussions cannot be seen on an MRI or CAT/CT Scan.
If the impact was strong enough to cause concussion, there is a high likelihood that additional injuries to the head & neck occurred. It is important to treat these injuries to prevent the development of persisting symptoms after concussion (PSaC).
Signs & Symptoms of Concussion
Signs and symptoms of concussion are typically worse within the first 48 hours and gradually improve over time.
Our concussion experts recognize that symptoms of concussion are non-specific and may be due to other/additional injuries. A comprehensive approach to concussion diagnosis and management optimizes recovery.
